Dare to go dramatic with furnishings, whether you’ve got a bedroom up in the eaves of a barn conversion or in an old country manor, this traditional space is an appealing option. The sheer scale of the original beams means that your furniture can be more dramatic, and still not look OTT; a brass bedstead, crystal chandelier and carved baroque-style armchair look right at home in this attic bedroom. The natural wood floor just adds to the timeless elegance.
In terms of the look and feel of the space, Scandi influences were the starting point for much of the decor in the bedroom – muted tones and natural materials are prominent throughout. ‘We used magnetic plaster, which is a type of plaster that allows you to turn any wall into a magnetic surface. It’s great because you can hang anything, from pictures to shelves, on it by adding a magnetic strip to the back.
Dress with wallpaper, trick the eye by papering a cupboard or wardrobe door with a fun, mural or wallpaper design. This fabulously creative idea requires minimal effort and time – just choose a wallpaper in line with your budget. Look for a design that emphasises the scale and height of the ceiling while providing a striking focal point. For a seamless look, it may help to replace obtrusive doorknobs or handles.
